APRIL 2002

April ShowersI've always heard that April Showers bring May Flowers, but no one ever told me they'd be April Snow Showers!

If you live somewhere on this planet where it's warm, sunny, and spring time be grateful. Here in Calgary, it's still snowing. Somehow, we missed the memo that Spring is almost a full month gone!

For those of you who DO live in areas where you can get out and enjoy the day, visit BackpackingMall Get you travel and sports equipment there.

Well, this month there is no poll. The site serving the poll program went down last month and made the site practically inaccessible. Once I removed the tag for the polls all was well with our site again. BUT, I don't want to go through that mess again. Until I can program a script to run our own polls off our server the polls are gone. Hopefully, that'll be my goal for next month!

As usual, I'd like to take this moment to welcome all of our new subscribers and bid a 'welcome back' to our returning ones.

IN THIS MONTHS ISSUE:

APRIL'S RECIPES

In the spirit of the month of April, we've added two "April Fool's Days" type recipes from one of our regulars. Ok, so April Fool's Day is gone, but kids love this stuff year round! Thanks to Jamy G. for these fun recipes.

"Chicken" cashew stir fry
(Thanks to Family Fun magazine Via Jamy G.)

2-3 green rolls and 1 red rollfruit rollups
1 1/2 tsp hulled sunflower seeds
1 1/2 cups dried apple rings
3/4 cups dried pineapple chunks
1/2 cup cashews
  • To make the fake pea pods, take the green rollups and cut them into 2 1/4 inch squares.
  • Arrange 5-6 sunflower seeds on the strip in a vertical row just off center.
  • Fold the strip over in half over the seeds and seal the edges together by pressing them and cut it into the shape of a peapod with scissors or a knife.
  • Cut the red rollups into long thin strips like peppers
  • Cut the dried apples into pieces like chicken bits.
  • Combine them all together in a frying pan (just for effect) and serve them to people, giving them a set of chopsticks to use.
Kitty Litter Cake
Gross out factor *high*...perfect for middle school-age boys
(A Jamy G Original!)

1 of eachSmall brand new kitty litter box and litter scoop (brand new for OBVIOUS reasons)
1 pkg white cake mix
 tootsie rolls
 milk duds
caramel or fudge (like the syrupy kind you buy for icecream)
  • Bake the cake according to instructions on the box.
  • It doesn't matter what shape pan you use since nobody is going to ever know what shape it used to be.
  • Once the cake is baked and cooled, take a fork and crumble it up so that it is in small crumbly bits.
  • Place a layer of the crumbled cake on the bottom of the litter pan (about and inch or two) then our on the caramel or fudge.
  • Then mix the tootsie rolls and milk duds in with the remaining cake crumble and dump it all into the litter pan on top of the caramel/fudgeed layer.
  • This way you sort of have the "frosting" in the middle and the milkduds and tootsie rolls also adds that whole extra "ick" factor (I don't need to say what they will look like do I? ).
  • Serve straight out of the kitty litter pan using the scoop!

RAMBLINGS

Ok, so I've been griping for two or three newsletters now about the weather. I can't explain the jealousy I feel when I watch those cutesy ads on TV of young children in their Easter Best, romping through the spring grass and flowers on an egg hunt. Yeah, we had a snow storm Easter Day that shut the roads down!

I'm a summer person -- gardening, outdoor fire pits, meals outside -- BRING THEM ON! I'll have to sit down and figure out some good summer ideas to share for the June issue of this Newseltter. I'm also open to receive anyone's summer games, gardening tips, or recipes. Just email them to me and I'll get them into the June Newsletter!

Well folks, that's it for another month. As usual, if you have any suggestions or contributions let me know! We're always up to suggestions and recipes sent in also have the chance to be included on the website.
