ParentsWorld Monthly -- March 2004 |

Welcome to the (late) March edition of the ParentsWorld newsletter!
Though almost two weeks late it's finally here - the March Newsletter! March is an odd month - not quite spring, not quite winter. I have to fight the urge to start my seeds and buy garden stuff. I usually give in and end up with seedlings that are way too mature to survive in the house as I await the late Calgary summer. No, I never learn :) This month I'm thrilled to bring you an article from a African American parenting Web site, CelebratingChildren.com. They recently launched a new column targeted to single parents called “Parenting Solo.” The column is written by Angela D. Scott of L.A. Parent Magazine and she's graciously allowed us to reprint it here. We also bring another article on some of the social prejudices that single parents have to go through.

Happy Valentine's Day to all our Single Parents and non-Single Parents! The February edition of the newsletter is always a time where I pause to reflect - it was a February that I first started writing the newsletter. This marks the Fourth February, and hence the fourth year of getting out the monthly newsletter! Don't sit home feeling alone, instead chose this time to celebrate the love between you and your children. You might be single, but you're never alone and unloved! This month we bring you an article that's both interesting and humourous about the woes of Valentine's Day for the single parson. Also included is an article on Top 10 Deadly Thoughts of Be-Frazzled, Frustrated, Exhausted Mothers - a must read for Mom's and Dad's alike! Click below to read the newsletter...

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Wishing you and your loved ones the best in the year to come.
We somehow survived yet another Christmas season - every year that amazes me. My worry and panic over the sparse gifts under the tree were set aside when it was declared "the best Christmas ever" by my children. A new year now greets us with renewed hopes and dreams. A time to start fresh. Be it to lose weight, quit smoking, or just to look at each day with a more positive eye - there's a wonderful renewed feeling when a new year starts. This month we welcome an article from a guest writer about turning Christmas left overs into a gourmet treat. Also included is an article on how to make snacking more fun for your kids and easier for you. Finally there's an interesting article on Seven Golden Tactics for Parents that's bound to cause some comments. Click below to read the newsletter...

Fall is settling in, our Trick-or-treaters have full bellies and it's time to start thinking about the Holidays.
Once again we bring your attention to our Holiday project for 2003. This year, we've chosen to help some schools fund projects that the kids need. So far, we've set up a Hands on Science Program, Bought books for a Beginners Reading Program, and now are working toward buying a photocopier for a classroom. Read more about it here and please consider funding a small portion of the project. This month we bring and article from a guest writer on the topic children of divorce having to split up holiday time. Another guest writer writes about Single Parents taking part in the two parent world of playgroups. And finally a Happy Thanksgiving goes out to all our American Readers!

ParentsWorld Monthly -- October 2003 |

It's October and anyone who's been around any length of time at SPW knows what that means - it's time for our Christmas Project!
This year we're doing things differently. After learning about the great things done for school kids at Donors Chose we've decided to fund a school for a reading project. In the past we've adopted a single family, helping two or three people through the Christmas Season. This year, we'll be helping a whole classroom of grade schoolers learn to read and set their foundations for the future! Read more about it here and please consider funding a small portion of the project. This month we bring and article from a guest writer on the topic of whether or not to help your child clean their room. This is an ongoing fight in MY house! Another guest writer helps you to know what to do when someone close to you (or even you) experiences changes in life. With most endings and transitions --such as job changes, the ending of a relationship, or the death of a loved one -- grief and sadness are a normal part of the process. How do you deal with it? Read the article to find out! And finally a Happy Thanksgiving goes out to all our Canadian Readers!

ParentsWorld Monthly -- September 2003 |
|
Posted by: admin |
Once again, it's back to school time for the kids. I understand in this ever changing society that many children went back in August but on a whole, most still wait until after labour day.
Back to school is both an exciting and a dreaded time. For the children, the excitement of a new year and meeting new friends is almost unbearable as the day approaches. Also, the fears of new situations, the unknown, and the dreaded homework take some of that exciting edge off. For me, as a parent, it means I get my house back and we go back on a regular "non-summer" schedule. What's that? That's regular bed times, dinner at the table, homework after school -- my home goes to heck in a handbasket over the summer as the nice weather and lazy days mess up any hope of a schedule that I might have had. For me, the dreaded part is the fees, the supplies, and the clothes. Who knew a public school education could be so expensive! This month we bring and article from a guest writer about organizing your teen daughter for school. Don't have a teen daughter? It's ok, there's lots of good information there for all parents. As Christmas approaches and money gets tighter a lot of people fall victim to the "no money down" financing that you see everywhere. Do take a moment to read the article about the pitfalls of this type of a deal. And finally, with a heavy heart we still remember all of the victims, families and loved ones effected by the events of September 11, 2001. Our hearts go out to you.

It's August -- hard to accept but official summer is winding up. I'm not sure how that happened because I will swear it just started!
August is time to figure out back to school, and yes...even work your way towards Christmas planning. Too bad, because I was just getting used to the lazy summer days! Don't miss what's new on the website! As a single parent money is often tight and we can't afford to buy our kids the latest and greatest clothes. So you've got a closet full of baby clothes but your toddler has only two pairs of pants, what are you going to do? Visit ParentsWorld Swap, that's what! Our new area where parents can trade clothes, toys and other items is free to use and here's how it works. First off, you need to have created, and logged into, your free ParentsWorld account. once you've done that, go to the ParentsWorld Swap area and browse ads or place your own. No one is ever allowed to charge you for the items posted. Your only cost will be shipping if you can't find what you need in your own area. Let's face it, $20 in shipping fees is much cheaper than buying new a whole box of clothes. Also, you get to decide if you or the receiving party will pay for shipping -- what ever works best for both parties. If you want, you can also specify to swap only with people in your own area. Take a moment today to offer your items to someone in need or post your own message requesting things that you're short of. Let's build up the list so that we have a database brimming with items that people can use! To go to the Swap area, click here

How is it that now that it's finally here, all I'm doing is complaining about the heat?! I'd like to wish a happy Canada Day to all of our Canadian Readers and a Happy July 4th to all our American Readers. ParentsWorld Monthly -- June 2003 |
|
Posted by: admin |
| JUNE 2003 | June has finally arrived. The month of new growth, tanned faces and the end of school!
As June marks the beginning of picnic season, we've added two easy picnic recipes for this month and coupled with that is a guest article on saving money when you buy food. That's something great knowing any time of the year! Often if people need to move they wait until the school year is finished. More people move in June and July than in any other time of the year. This month we share with you an article on easing the trauma of relocating for children. My "ramblings" section is a little different this month not dealing with a parenting issue at all. After I'd heard a few comments about pop ups on this site (trust me, we have none) I thought it was time to let the average user know that not only does ParentsWorld.com not use pop ups but to explain the programs that are forcing pop ups on you and threatening your security. As usual, I'd like to take this moment to welcome all of our new subscribers and bid a 'welcome back' to our returning ones. |
