McKenzie 210: Our Family and Scouting in 1996.
Our Family is lucky enough to have two girls in the Scouting movement: Sacha is 8 and a first year cub. Emily is 6 and is a first time, but second year, Beaver. Next year Gregory will be old enough for Beavers and he can hardly wait! We belong to the McKenzie 210 group in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. This is our first year being involved in Scouting and it has been the greatest experience.
Sacha's Cub Pack has taken part in many camps the most
receint being the winter Kub Kar Rally Camp. Sacha's car came in out of all the first year cubs in the area! The only girl
to make the finals, I am proud to say :) After grabbing winning tips from the
other Cubs, we are already making plans for next years car. Sacha has now earned
eight badges and is working on a few more. Her favourite so far has been her disability
awareness badge.
Emily's Beaver Colony has been pretty busy this year. It seems that every other week they are going on a field trip somewhere. They have been to Spruce Meadows to see the horses and to the Chocolate Factory (YUM!). Emily is the most proud of her book shelf that she built. It hold a place of honour in our livingroom. She is now rather impatiently awaiting her first camp this spring. Emily also watched the Kub Kar Rally with great interest and is now making her own plans for future races when she is a Cub.

May 23, 1997 brought us to the first annual McKenzie 210 All Section Camp. This special event brought together the Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Venturers, Leaders and Families of McKenzie Scouters. Regardless of the fact that it rained all weekend it was a fantastic time! Through the soaked tents, wet feet and muddy bodies you could see the joy and excitement on all faces involved.
Special
events, too numerous to mention, went on during the entire weekend. The best memories
were the visitors that we had were with us to honour the spirit of the 1997 World Police/Fire Games here
in Calgary. We had visits from the Redwood Meadows
Fire Department and Ambulance. The children (big and small) were able to view
the tools known as the Jaws of Life and see how they work. We were also able to
go through the trucks. The thrill of the evening happened when the HAWC1
Hellicopter stopped by to visit. They hovered
just above the campsite and showed us all of the tools used in the persuit and
capture of criminals. This big kid thought it was pretty cool!
So many more great events happened that we could fill a whole page just talking
about the weekend. A lot of people worked very hard to make this a really special
weekend. From great food to great fun to fantastic people, we look forward to
taking part in this event next year and for many years to come!
