    LOTS FUN MUCH MONEY
    ANATOMY A SHOESTRING ADVENTURE
    Lots Fun Much Money

Just most people I live on a “just barely” income We’ve got “just barely” enough pay rent just barely enough pay our bills just barely enough keep groceries ‘fridge just barely enough put a little bit a savings account just barely enough a few “disposable dollars” left over end month today’s prices our disposable dollars get “disposed of” really quickly There just isn’t much out there can entertainment that’s “cheap ” there isn’t much out there unless know where look know how can on a “shoestring ”

We’ve going on Shoestring Adventures since day one Whenever had much money spend on splashy vacations even when we went “ vacation” stretching our dollars rule Over years I’ve learned how stretch our money cover sorts incredible “road trips”---sometimes just one day sometimes a whole week Whenever wherever we’ve gone we’ve had experiences “money couldn’t buy ” two dozen photo albums stacked up my hall closet prove

There’s little point me telling exactly where go how get there when get there Since our Shoestring Adventures tailored appeal us may appeal I can share how create own Shoestring Adventure---one tailor- fit family budget interests a few simple skills a handy collection “stuff ” just a little bit planning preparation you’ll on way

    Keep Things Handy

First don’t a really good roadmap area ( area intend travel)---BUY onE I’m talking a simple map that’s got major roads a travel atlas I’m talking one big paper roadmaps can never refold correctly can usually buy excellent state roadmap stores Kmart Wal*Mart Walgreen’s any bookstore Before buy roadmap sure “Places Interest” marked on verify open map “Legend” “Key” (where explain symbols on map). Places interest usually marked something a red dot a blue square fact roadmaps we’ve purchased use red dots we know simply refer places “red dots on map ”

Second assemble a “Road Adventure Kit” keep ready go can use anything a cardboard box a plastic milk crate a “tub” ( a Rubbermaid storage tub can buy Wal*Mart), even a nice wicker picnic basket Personally we use a crate; it’s easy carry fits nicely bed our truck (along our other Road Adventure items). should start assembling kit including crate any following:

    Binoculars
A roll paper towels a bottle hand sanitizer
Picnic items (paper plate plastic utensils etc )
A plastic tablecloth ( “disposable” kind can buy cheap)
    A couple big “beach” towels
    A small first-aid kit
    Insect repellent
A sharp knife a can opener scissors
Travel-sized games Scrabble playing cards etc
A gallon fresh drinking water ( sure refresh regularly)
    A pad paper pencils pens
    A “Road Adventure” log book

“Road Adventure Kit” should tailor- fit family’s needs aren’t big on picnics picnic items can still come handy fast-food meals fried chicken even burgers fries Eat lunch outside a park might glad tablecloth (public picnic tables rarely anything close clean), towels can spread out on benches something clean sit on

should also think including kit personal needs (a couple clean diapers baby a box facial tissues runny noses feminine sanitary products when get caught “unaware ” any anti-allergic medications might need etc ). creative Also let first few road adventures teach need along you’ve forgotten something a note next time re-assembling kit sure add item Also helps buy duplicates things can opener can leave kit ready go

    Find a “Red Dot Interest”

Here’s where fun planning a road adventure can come play First need determine a day trip a half-day trip a two-day trip etc Also very young children might well on a longer car trip trip limit a one-hour car ride one way then look places interest 40 miles home Even though most speed limits on major roads least 60mph never figure actually average 40-45 miles one hour’s driving time might even want trace a general circle on map around home know lies desired traveling distance can even draw incremental circles on map indicate one hour two hours etc , away home Just remember always come home allowances when play Adventure

Once know how far can easily travel ( return), then can start looking on map Look “red dots interest” marked on map anywhere circumference desired travel radius places interest usually short description next them: “Pioneer Park ” “Children’s Museum ” “Historic Home ” there red dots then look towns you’ve never visited roads you’ve never traveled We’ve often pleasantly surprised we’ve found: a quaint little town shops; a long winding rural road dotted small farms old homes maybe a sign says “Fresh Honey Sale” where we got a spontaneous “tour” a beekeeper’s hives; a historic landmark marked road signs

When there red dots can also a little bit planning ahead phoning a local Chamber Commerce Find a small town learn area code ( necessary), call directory assistance number Chamber Commerce (better yet surf Web a town web site ). Ask what’s town small towns own historic museum other historic landmarks Maybe a really great community park where biggest tree county growing

places interest choices can really limitless small town parks two-room county museums aren’t thing then first determine things family find interest Surf web call Chambers Commerce visit bookstore library where can find books “Things Do” state Adventure can anything take away home day create a delightful memory whole family

children older 5 6 then a wonderful opportunity teach how read use roadmaps can even let plan own Shoestring Adventure one child then can appoint a Trip Planner a navigator a Supplies Officer Give specific tasks include finding a place go ( where how far away it), how get there ( roads need turn on how miles travel before get next turn), need enjoy day ( special clothing outdoor activities picnic lunch items toys games enjoy car pillows sleepy-heads a long day’s outing). Instead telling where you’ll going let tell

I need caution you: prepared “red dot interest” turn out nothing We’ve often tracked down dots claim “Historic Fort” “County Landmark” turned out nothing a bronze plaque on a rock end a residential street When happens we simply wander around wherever we see there see Sometimes we’ve happened local street fairs windsurfing tournaments a model train museum Sometimes too we’ve gotten out a day away home When happens you’ve got disappointed kids car then might a good time find ice cream parlor treat a double scoop peanut butter fudge ice cream

Use Road Adventure logbook record everyone’s comments day can collect brochures restaurant placemats ticket stubs keep a memory album take pictures sure include a few can a great basis school reports younger kids

Basically Shoestring Adventures can just whatever want Know advance budget “work” family far meals concerned (whether can pack a picnic lunch stop McDonald’s), how far home can venture time traveling adventuring Never plan can comfortably a day place things see then plan repeat visits Cramming just a couple activities day can put whole family on “Adventure Overload ”

I hope enjoy next“Shoestring Adventure” continue get away find “red dots interest” marked on map a habit enjoy being together experiencing new different things

    Teen Driving Crazy

Teens test limits any parent’s sanity It’s easy parents overreact find fault teen there’s plenty blame go around Start nature A recent series tests shown teenagers experience a certain amount electrical disarray brain functions may account parents notice unusual irrational behavior times A parent’s overreaction teen’s annoying behavioral swings can add insult injury bring out worst any child

Don’t worry still charge A teen’s assertiveness prepares life apart parents How deal troublesome years likely tone any relationship hope maintain child when adults Reacting behavior strictly on emotion a challenge authority unlikely produce results want also produce a wall teen end any useful communication

a dad seven kids it’s my experience parenting requires walking a tightrope balance a desire children grow responsible fulfilled adults a need allow develop own personality want Fortunately me none taken up guitar started playing ear-shattering music biting heads off canaries hoping next Ozzie Osbourne happens

Growing up 1960s 1970s I had then a few friends had garage bands wanted fame parents tolerated considered a brief fling music kept pressure on kids stay school pursue other career avenues waiting big break Most teens ended up adults other careers appreciated guidance parents provided tells me way parents handled things reasonable worked

teen a desire move a path doesn’t suit it’s time serious decision making shut off opportunity express themselves may shut out might tolerate loud guitar playing time time order retain a certain level influence over other cases might a few trips doctor because teen loves skating skateboarding sustained injury three understand ability enjoy personal interests may may lead a career hinges on ability allowed input choices

It’s one thing encourage self-expression another provide negative influence parents allow underage teens drink alcoholic beverages smoke home Sometimes culture come other cases it’s allowed because parents did when teens Before allow child something essentially illegal consider ramifications When allow teens break law whatever reason teaching situation ethics means can obey disobey law depending on situation that’s only consequence

A family a teen star school sports team likely host a victory party one time another parents tolerate even encourage consumption alcoholic beverages event buy a keg beer everyone balk idea one beer going hurt anyone think precedent sets lesson learned teens anytime anything exciting good happens it’s time a beer old “ I say don’t I do” defense doesn’t hold water Children learn example always

Even self-expression it’s limits I met a family long ago two teen boys fourteen sixteen years old moved a home around corner where we lived talking father I out boys completely obsessed backyard wrestling parents had even purchased old boxing ring fixed up allowed kids use wrestling matches a friend one teens had seriously injured himself backyard wrestling someone else’s house parents second thoughts when said YES now need say

a youth I had my own experiences wrestling got idea Most injuries occur backyard wrestling matches happen because there adult supervision I suggested parents hit books find out everything possible Greco-Roman style wrestling most kids watch on TV way wrestling a perversion Real wrestling can just satisfying standpoint a physical challenge two people trying hit other folding chairs throw other person out ring drew up a list rules neighborhood kids could take part matches practice only when agreed abide rules Responsible adults need present referee matches practice sessions Taking steps a better choice then simply cutting kids off something grown love

Giving teens room stretch very important Treating a teen a little kid a terrible mistake key understand personal freedom involves showing personal responsibility decide extend a curfew example give teen a cell phone insist on preset check times sure ready willing able tell where times reasonable limits Teens left themselves cruise around aimlessly accidents looking happen Help learn importance time use being able focus on things insisting create itinerary Explain new freedoms entirely dependent on ability use without putting themselves risk getting trouble violate trust send a message cutting back privileges

Things usually get ugly most families when a teen doesn’t get want stand ground Giving whims reducing punishments restoring privileges before preset time send a bad message Instead take sting out time reflect going out teen See a movie together go bowling participate any sport a common interest Spending time teen important much want get away also need know still love Nothing sends message better then being involved life

Most parents spend better part a teen’s years trying protect themselves Body piercing tattoos a good example When comes doing things permanent consequences parents important decision Even parents tattoos body piercing doesn’t mean allowing a teen a wise move I cannot tell how times I come across people children said later life “Why world did let me ” Due physical mental changes they’re undergoing seems a rational decision today may prove regrettable later life I recommend parents urge teens put off any decisions involve permanent alteration personal appearance until move out on own reach twenty-first birthday

out out rebellion goes much deeper then just self expression my view real question “How much rebellion too much ” kid decides want go gothic a long story short going Gothic usually means looking kind well a vampire bad sounds it’s probably worse then pompadour haircuts leather jackets flower power tie dyed stuff punk disco looks other generations Ever seen a vintage 1940’s Zoot Suit might a problem gothic teens cut other actually drink blood best response a teen’s request any major changes wardrobe probably “Why ”

Most teens major changes lives because feel left out can invitation cults negative influences step take over Help child step back take a look why might want associate one group another Give options worst case scenario biggest cause teen suicides when a teen feels options teens today far important then yesterday tomorrow It’s can see Show things get better involve alternative activity positive aspects

Being a parent isn’t a spectator sport especially when comes teens involved teenager’s life less likely fall common teenage traps drug abuse teen pregnancy problems begin when allow fall off radar screen Allowing teens freedom means watching closely Talk teens don’t preach explain consequences poor choices did things less then desirable a teen never light brag choices message send message teen receive a positive one
